John, I know firsthand just how hard our public school educators here in North Carolina work for our kids.

My mom was a teacher in NC public schools. I had the benefit of education in our public schools as did my children. I know that students can receive an excellent education with the help of dedicated teachers.

But our teachers aren’t getting the paychecks they deserve, John.

Over and over, I’ve prioritized teacher pay in budget proposals. Although Republican legislators have provided some raises, their investment falls far short of where we need to be to attract and retain qualified educators. They are worth so much more.

No teacher should have to take on a second or third job just to pay the bills. No teacher should have to go into debt to buy the supplies their students need out of their own pockets.

We have to increase starting teacher salaries and also give them the yearly raises they need. And we need to respect our veteran teachers and treat them like the professionals they are. Keeping teacher pay competitive with other states is key to ensuring our public school system is excellent and students receive the quality education they need.
