Dear John,
It’s no secret, moms who serve as elected officials face barriers tied to motherhood. We live in a country that has by and large failed to keep up with the demands of being a parent (especially in our legislatures) but in some places — with moms leading the way — that’s starting to change.
We talk all the time about the barriers moms face when they run for office and the barriers they continue to face once we’re elected. Last month, we witnessed firsthand why we need to keep fighting to fix a broken system.
Prince George’s County Council Member Krystal Oriadha is pregnant with her first child and is the FIRST pregnant person to ever serve on the Council. But last month, the Council voted against a resolution to allow members to vote remotely which would have prevented Krystal from voting when she was on maternity leave.
Members of the Council accused her of “playing the victim” and shamed her for trying to balance motherhood with her legislative duties. They flat out admitted that they wanted to make it harder for Krystal to vote.
But Krystal is a mama who doesn’t back down. She rallied her supporters and colleagues on Council to call for them to revisit the vote. In her own words to supporters, Krystal said, “You are standing firm with not just me, but every woman that is going to come after me.”
When we heard about Krystal’s fight, we mobilized our network to show up and show out for her. We beat the drum in our circles, we made calls, and helped draw attention and momentum to add to public pressure. We jumped right into this, and we couldn’t be prouder of that.
And guess what? The pressure worked. The voices demanding the Council do better multiplied, and now some members of the Council changed their vote and the resolution is on track to pass.
Moms won. This is huge and it took every person stepping up and doing what they can. THIS is how we create change.
Stories like Krystal’s are a reminder of why we do what we do, John. Your grassroots dollars do truly make a difference in our fight to break down the barriers that hold moms back and change our political landscape
