A Month in Review: September 2023 Congressional Update

While we avoided a government shutdown at the end of the month, it must be clear that we avoided this shutdown only because House Democrats were unyielding in our fight against extremist, right-wing policies from my Conservative colleagues in the House.

But government funding negotiations are far from over; the legislation we passed on September 30th was a continuing resolution, a temporary spending bill that extended government funding for 45 days until November 17th. As such, my government shutdown resource page will remain live on my website. I recommend that you read it or share it with anyone you know who might be affected so they can prepare in the event of a shutdown in November.

I have been sharing the catastrophic consequences with you about what a government shutdown would mean for our community and the nation. You have my commitment that I will continue to advocate for reasonable proposals that won’t hurt El Paso.

The Inflation Reduction Act is pivotal in our fight against climate change.

I hosted a webinar with the League of Conservation to talk with local stakeholders about the IRA's clean energy investments and how to access these beneficial programs.

Our servicemembers deserve top-quality care, and Conservatives have no problem denying them.

I was honored to speak with advocate groups about our legislative efforts to protect reproductive and gender-affirming healthcare and call on my colleagues to join us.

Hate and bigotry, coupled with easy access to weapons of war, make for a terrifying and deadly combination.

I proudly introduced the Disarm Hate Act to prevent individuals convicted of violent misdemeanor hate crimes from purchasing or possessing firearms.

Robb Elementary parents should be getting their kids ready for school. Instead, many are here in Washington begging my colleagues to act.

I joined them at a press conference at the Washington Monument to discuss legislative efforts to combat gun violence.

It was a pleasure to join City Rep. Rivera and District 7 for a community meeting to share what I've been working on in Congress.

I'm proud to have joined my fellow House Democrats in introducing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to protect that most fundamental right and safeguard our democracy.

It was an honor to be recognized as Policymaker of the Year alongside Rep. Maria Salazar by the Recording Industry Association of America for my immigration legislation.

Despite a hyper-partisan environment around immigration reform, our biggest challenges require bipartisan solutions and I'm proud to lead this charge with the Dignity Act.

I met with the American Cancer Society to discuss the importance of early detection in the fight against cancer.

I am proud to support the bipartisan MCED Screening Coverage Act as another step towards equitable access to healthcare for El Pasoans.
