Are US nukes coming back to Britain? CND went to find out!

As part of the no US nukes day of action on Saturday 23 September, CND sent a Citizens' Weapons Inspection team to RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk. Our aim was to search the base for nuclear weapons. However, base authorities refused us access and also blocked our attempts to hand in a letter expressing our concerns to the base commander.

Our CWI team then held a protest at the gates to condemn the lack of transparency and oversight of nuclear weapons deployments that have no democratic mandate or popular support.

We made a short video about the inspection attempt which is now available to watch on our social media. You can view and reshare on Twitter/X, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. We'd like to thank our colleagues at the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons who helped fund the production of the video.

You can find media coverage of the Citizens' Weapons Inspection and a gallery of photos from other day of action events on our website here

Militarising space and the nuclear threat - CND webinar

Keep Space for Peace week starts tomorrow, Saturday 7 October with events taking place globally to highlight the dangers of an increasingly-crowded space. Among them will be a rally outside RAF Croughton, a US spy base in Oxfordshire which serves as the military nerve centre of the US war machine in Britain.

On Thursday 12 October, CND will be hosting a webinar on how the growing militarisation of space has serious implications of global security, including a greater risk of nuclear war.

With guest speakers: Dave Webb, Convenor of the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space and co-author of the report ‘Heavens Above: Examining the UK’s Militarisation of Space’; Mélusine Lebret, academic at LSE European Institute specialising in outer space security; and Bruce Gagnon, co-founder and coordinator of the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space. Chaired by Kate Hudson, CND General Secretary.
