John, Voting rights nationwide are under attack. As a result of the Supreme Court gutting the Voting Rights Act of 1965 in its 2013 decision in Shelby County v. Holder, state legislatures have introduced a myriad of voter suppression bills, extreme gerrymandering, voter roll purges, and polling location closures targeting voters of color. Congress has a responsibility to defend our democracy and ensure that it remains by and for we, the people. That’s why we need the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, two transformative pieces of legislation designed to restore the Voting Rights Act and make voting easier and more accessible than ever before. Sign if you agree: Congress must take action to protect voting rights for all Americans. Together, the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act would combat the nationwide wave of voter suppression efforts and ensure that every eligible American can freely exercise their constitutional right to vote in several ways, including: - Restoring federal preclearance to protect voting rights in states with a history of voter suppression;
- Establishing automatic voter registration;
- Expanding early and mail-in voting;
- Banning partisan and racial gerrymandering; and
- Strengthening measures to increase campaign finance transparency and protect our elections from interference.
The right to vote, regardless of who you are and where you live, is a cornerstone of our democracy. The Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act would bring us closer to a nationwide voting standard that guarantees every American an equal voice and an equal vote.
