[link removed] [[link removed]] John,
There’s a reason why we were able to wrap up one of CREW’s best fundraising months ever last week: between launching CREW’s biggest legal fight yet and continuing to stand up for ethics and transparency while doing it, we showed America that we are dedicated to defending our democracy from any threat.
Here’s just some of the news we’re talking about:
When New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez was indicted for corruption, CREW led the call for his resignation. CREW President Noah Bookbinder appeared on CBS Evening News and we were featured in CNBC, Boston Globe, USA Today, Roll Call, Truthout and Bloomberg News about the indictment. Over half of Menendez’s Senate Democratic colleagues and several House Democrats have now similarly called for Menendez to step down.
We also stood with members of Congress last month in support of the Tenure Establishment and Retirement Modernization (TERM) Act, which establishes 18-year term limits for Supreme Court justices. In a speech at a rally in front of the Supreme Court announcing the legislation, Noah made it clear how the legislation would restore public confidence in the Supreme Court, and help the Court better resemble the country it serves.
This week, we published documents revealing how South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem’s staff and the South Dakota National Guard prepared to defend the use of a private donation to send troops to the border. The story built on our previous investigations and a transparency lawsuit we filed about the expensive deployment, and it was covered by the state’s largest newspapers.
We led a coalition with 23 other groups calling on the Department of Homeland Security this week to take action to ensure that domestic extremists don’t fill its ranks. The coalition joins more than 65 members of Congress who have called for changes within DHS to address the dangers of extremism and better safeguard the United States.
Meanwhile, our 14th Amendment work to disqualify Donald Trump from the Colorado ballot continues, and is earning coverage at the local and national levels. CREW was featured in outlets including NPR, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Truthout, Colorado Sun, and an op-ed in Colorado Politics. A trial date was also set to discuss Trump’s disqualification: the evidentiary hearing in our case to challenge Trump’s qualification under Section 3 in Colorado will begin on October 30th.
Other developments we’re watching include Sam Bankman-Fried’s fraud trial, Clarence Thomas’s failure to report his attendance at Koch network donor events, and Jan. 6 participant Dino DiGiovanni’s candidacy for Mayor in Derby, Connecticut—about which we’ve been featured in the Associated Press, Bloomberg News and Politico.
We can’t do this work without supporters like you. If one or more of these issues resonate with you, we hope you’ll consider making a donation to help us see these fights through and keep our fundraising streak going strong. → [[link removed]]
