Strengthening networks: 2023 Litigators Convening in South Africa

At the beginning of September, our team held our latest women-only litigators convening in South Africa, which brought together 23 participants from 12 countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
With a mixture of speakers, presentations, and round table discussions, the convening celebrated open dialogue and learning, deepening understandings of current challenges in digital rights and freedom of expression.

PARTNERS

Extending our partnership with three excellent media defence centres in sub-Saharan Africa

We are excited to announce that we have extended our partnership with Campaign for Free Expression (CFE), Collectif des Associations Contre l'Impunite au Togo (CACIT) and Volunteers for Sustainable Development in Africa (VOSIEDA).

We are proud to support the integral work that these centres do to protect and promote freedom of expression. As threats and attacks on journalists and civil society actors become increasingly prevalent their provision of legal defence and social support is essential.

15 YEARS OF MEDIA DEFENCE

15 years of impact: Internet shutdowns

This year marks Media Defence’s 15th anniversary. To celebrate this milestone,
we are taking a look at the ways in which freedom of expression has been threatened around the world, and how we have sought to protect it.

Internet shutdowns are used by states to limit opposition and disarm dissent.
These throttling or blocking measures often coincide with critical political events,
such as elections or protests.

Media Defence was one of the first organisations to litigate against internet
shutdowns, having challenged them since 2017. We have financially supported
or litigated around 20 instances of internet shutdowns or web blocking in
nine countries across four continents.
