The 27th Annual Race Against Hunger

Thank you to:

  • Over 350 walkers, runners, bikers, hikers, and even rollerbladers who participated with us at the Navy Yard and around the country as virtual participants.
  • The 41 local food pantries and other food programs who joined us in raising funds and awareness to build a more food secure Philadelphia region.
  • Our generous sponsors including our presenting sponsor Cigna Healthcare, as well as Highmark Wholecare, the Specter Family Foundation, the Vogt Foundation, Podium Performance Care, and Fulton Bank.
  • Our fabulous volunteers who helped us ensure everything went according to plan at the Navy Yard.
  • Everyone who helped spread the word and donated to help us raise funds to further our mission.

The 27th Annual Race Against Hunger was a huge success, thanks to the help of so many of you! We are incredibly thankful for the support of the community and to finally be back walking and running together again. We are already looking forward to next year.

While the walking and running may be over, fundraising continues through October 20th. Your support is critical as we experience a hunger crisis. With the increased cost of food and the end of pandemic related food assistance, food insecurity is on the rise. More households are in need of food resources than at the start of the pandemic, and food distribution programs are struggling to meet the current need. Donate today to help us ensure all Philadelphians have the food they need to live healthy lives.

Policy and Advocacy

SNAP Benefits: The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently announced the updated income eligibility limits for SNAP applicants, as well as the maximum benefit amount that can be granted to SNAP recipients for the current fiscal year (October 2023-September 2024).

Averting a Government Shutdown: On Saturday, hours before the Government was set to shutdown due to the federal fiscal year ending with no new funding in place, Congress passed a Continuing Resolution to temporarily fund the government. Congress now has until November 17 to pass funding for the current fiscal year to avert a government shutdown, which would cause disruptions in programs like SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for Women, Infants, and Children). We will be watching Congress carefully and urging our legislators to fund the government and avert a shutdown. It is crucial that hard-working Americans do not become collateral damage in an ideological battle over spending priorities.

WIC Funding: In Philadelphia, it is estimated that just over 50% of eligible families participate in the WIC program, which years of research shows leads to healthier infants, more nutritious diets, better health care for children, and higher academic achievement for students. WIC participation is now growing to reach a higher share of eligible families, but this positive development means that the program is at risk of being underfunded. It is crucial that Congress provides funding to adequately serve all WIC participants or risk substantially adding to the current hunger crisis.

Share Your SNAP Experience

Share Your Experience With SNAP

We want to hear directly from individuals with experience applying for and/or getting SNAP benefits in order to understand the positives and negatives of the program, as well as hear suggestions for how it could be improved.

With the Farm Bill reauthorization ongoing, it's critical that SNAP be protected from additional restrictions, and we know there are many ways to improve the program. Your experience can help!

We are asking participants to:

  1. Participate in a short call with a member of the Coalition Against Hunger staff to go over the project.
  2. Come to the Coalition Against Hunger’s office in Old City for a 1 hour pre-arranged interview about your experience with SNAP.

 MAKE A STAND AGAINST HUNGER!

We strive to build a community where all people have the food they need to lead healthy lives. Hunger is preventable. Thank you for your continued support of our work!
