Last month, Donald Trump was arrested in Georgia after his fourth indictment of the year – this one related to his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 Presidential election. In the months following the November 2020 election, Trump and his allies took numerous actions, including intimidating the Georgia Republican Secretary of State, to try to overturn his loss.
This is a deeply disappointing moment for our country, and looking back, it is hard to fathom just how close we were to a total collapse of our democracy – led by a former President.
The criminal justice system will deal with Donald Trump and his allies – but what is undeniable is that today, our democracy is under attack more than at any point in our nation’s history.
Before running for Congress, I built a career in national security, studying other countries. We would often talk about a period of 10 or 12 years where they were so polarized, and their politics were such a mess, they couldn’t get anything done. And the United States is in one of those periods now – what I would call a decade of instability.
I believe we will get through this time, but in order to do that we must do a better job of protecting our rights. And that begins with electing principled leaders who will safeguard the rights of the American people – leaders who will organize and do a better job of laying out a strategy on protecting our most fundamental rights, and even our democracy itself.
As I think about where we are in our country’s history, it is hard to overstate the importance of our Senate race next year – an open seat in a notorious swing state that could decide who controls the White House and Congress. I will never stop fighting to be the principled leader that Michiganders deserve, but I do know we have a tough fight ahead and it’s going to take all of us working together to get it done. That’s why I’m asking for your support today:
