We are also funded differently than any other news media organization in the country. Many news outlets rely on advertising, paywalls and subscriptions, corporate sponsorships, or even some billionaire backer to help cover their expenses.

Our largest source of revenue is grassroots donations from members of our community.

That wasn't always the case. Nearly a decade ago, like other news media outlets, Daily Kos relied solely on advertising revenue to cover our operating expenses, but those days are long gone. We also rely on list building, in which Democratic and progressive campaigns pay for the opportunity to make their case to our readers via email, but more recently, competitors have disrupted that revenue source. Those competitors undermined our work by outright allowing candidates and committees to email Democratic small donors with no opt-in or consent whatsoever from the people they were contacting—a practice Daily Kos refuses to do to make a quick buck.

Not gonna lie, it's been a rough year with both advertising and list building revenue dropping. We made deep financial cuts and are making other changes in hopes of impacting our revenue. We are finally starting to see some of our revenue rebound, but the reality is that we aren't out of the woods yet.

The fact is that if Daily Kos were to disappear tomorrow—which has happened to scores of news media outlets over the past decade—nothing would ever take our place.
