John, Americans are once again reeling from a tragic weekend. 22 killed in El Paso, Texas – and then not even 24 hours later, 9 killed in Dayton, Ohio.

My heart goes out to the families of the victims and these communities as they deal with these unspeakable tragedies.

Violent tragedies like those in El Paso and Dayton can be prevented and must be prevented. The House has already approved two bills to save lives and expand background checks across our country. They’ve been sitting on Mitch McConnell’s desk for months.

In response to tragedy after tragedy, we've taken no significant action to curb the violence in the last 25 years here in the United States. It's shameful.

No matter how difficult it might be, we cannot be jaded by years of inaction. There are simply too many lives at stake for us to accept tragedies like these as unpreventable occurrences. For our kids and our grandkids, for our mothers and our fathers, for strangers and friends alike, we will fight until we can give Americans the safety and security they deserve.

Enough is enough.
