After Unprecedented Defiance, Alabama Finally Has a Fair Congressional Map ([link removed])

By Madeleine Greenberg

Here are some recent updates.
* After three Supreme Court rulings and unprecedented defiance from Republicans, Alabama finally ([link removed]) has a fair congressional map with a second Black-opportunity district in place for the 2024 elections.
* Former President Donald Trump filed ([link removed]) a motion to dismiss his Jan. 6 federal indictment case, claiming he is immune from prosecution because he was president at the time of the alleged conduct.
* Tennessee House Rep. Justin Jones (D) filed ([link removed]) a federal lawsuit arguing that his expulsion from the state House violated his 1st and 14th Amendment rights. Jones was expelled by the Republican-led House in April for protesting in support of gun reform legislation.
* Ohio voters asked ([link removed]) the state Supreme Court for permission to file objections to the new Republican-gerrymandered legislative maps adopted by the Ohio Redistricting Commission last week.
* A New York court held ([link removed]) a hearing to determine if new absentee voting law Assembly Bill 7931 will be blocked as litigation continues in a lawsuit filed by the state's Republican Party.
* The First U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard ([link removed]) an appeal from Maine asking to reverse a lower court decision that ruled the state violated federal law when it tried to prevent a conservative group from gaining free access to and publishing voters' personal information.

Here’s what to expect tomorrow.
* There is oral argument in the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Republicans’ appeal ([link removed]) of the decision that blocked Louisiana’s congressional map for likely violating the Voting Rights Act. Follow along with Democracy Docket’s live coverage ([link removed]) on Twitter at 10 a.m. EDT!
* The opinion from the trial is due ([link removed]) in the New Mexico congressional redistricting challenge following last week’s trial.
