Dear John,
On Tuesday, the House of Representatives removed Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House. This is an unprecedented moment in the history of our country.
As Members of Congress, we have been entrusted with the responsibility to do what is best for the American people through bipartisanship and compromise. However, instead of working on critical issues facing our country, extreme Republicans in Congress took historic and never before seen steps that could bring the People’s House to a screeching halt.
That is why on Monday, October 9th I will be hosting a conversation and Q&A at Sacramento State University to discuss how we got here and what happens next.

Currently, the House of Representatives is not allowed to debate or pass any legislation without an elected Speaker of the House, but we have work to do for the American people. We have to come together as Democrats and Republicans to find bipartisan ways to fund our government, lower costs for working families, increase access to health care, and so much more.
It’s time for Congress to stop governing from crisis to crisis and start investing in strong systems that work for all Americans. Democracy works best when everyone’s voice is heard, so I hope you will join us on Monday at Sacramento State University. I look forward to seeing you there.
