Big Tech has a new plan to derail personal privacy, Artificial Intelligence (AI) accountability, and worker rights with secret, multinational digital trade agreements.

The secretive process for negotiating trade deals works to Big Tech’s advantage. They’re exploiting the privileged access provided to corporate special interests, while the public and the press are excluded. [1]

At this very moment, Big Tech is using their army of lobbyists, money and influence in an attempt to rig trade agreements behind closed doors. If they succeed, the implications are grave – but people from across the civil rights, labor, faith and consumer privacy movements are joining together to stop this sneak attack.

Their targets include a 13-country U.S.-Asia deal called the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework and a new pact within the global World Trade Organization. They’re pushing for binding requirements that would undermine government oversight of the tech sector here in the United States and around the globe. If Big Tech gets their way, the rules would:

Guarantee tech companies’ ability to ship, process and store people’s personal data around the global without regard to consumer privacy and data security standards;
Evade scrutiny of and accountability for AI that expands racial discrimination, gender discrimination, labor rights violations and other abuses;
Accelerate the offshoring of data-driven service sector jobs to low-wage countries with atrocious human rights records; and
Gut antitrust enforcement and other competition policies that constrain the abuses of tech monopolies.

We need to shine a light on Big Tech’s shady backroom dealing, which is why Accountable Tech is joining partners like ReThink Trade and others to demand a transparent process that doesn’t inherently give Big Tech the upper hand.
