Workforce Development Program Provides the Tools to Inspire Next Generation of Carpenters & Homebuilders
CHBA BC

Yesterday, CHBA BC CEO, Neil Moody and CHBA Vancouver Island Executive Officer, Kerriann Coady headed to Kwalikum Secondary School in Qualicum Beach to make a special presentation aimed at inspiring the next generation of skilled trades.

The school had an existing joinery program but wanted to expand it to include carpentry and needed some additional tools. Due to budget restrictions, the expansion looked like it couldn't happen.

That's when CHBA BC's Workforce Development Program stepped in. CHBA BC, with support from CHBA VI member, Slegg Building Materials, provided almost $3,000 in carpentry tools to set the program in the right direction.

Slegg is a strong member of CHBA VI and is always willing to help encourage students to pursue a career in the skilled trades. It was a natural fit for them to come on board and help provide much-needed tools to this expanding program.

The students were all very excited to receive the tools and are looking forward to being able to use them!

While CHBA BC's Workforce Development Program is still in its early stages of development, we're always on the lookout for unique partnerships like this which are intended to encourage young people to pursue the rewarding careers that exist in the skilled trades.

Do B.C.'s New Housing Targets Keep Pace with Population Growth?
Vancouver Sun

The analysis of the ambitious housing targets set for the initial 10 municipalities identified under the Housing Supply Act continues with some housing experts suggesting that even if municipalities meet the targets, B.C. will still fall well short of the housing needed to cool prices and meet future immigration levels.

In total, over 60,000 net new housing units will be required to be completed within five years for the first 10 municipalities. Net new means new units that are ready for move-in, minus units that were lost through demolition.

In this Vancouver Sun article, housing analysts suggest that even an accelerated pace of building won't be enough to meet the demand across the province as forecasted by the Canada Mortgage Housing Corporation by 2030.

CHBA CI President Says Housing Supply Act Target for Kamloops Will be a Challenge
CBC Radio

If you missed it, CHBA CI President and builder with Fulcrum Development Group, Tom Calne was recently interviewed on Daybreak Kamloops about the housing targets for the city set by the Province under the Housing Supply Act.

Tom says meeting the target of over 4,000 net new homes in the next five years for Kamloops is achievable but will be difficult given high inflation and the cost of materials.

You can listen to the full interview here.

Metro Vancouver's Plan to Hike Development Fees Jeopardizes Housing Funding
Vancouver Sun

Burnaby's mayor has slammed the federal housing minister for holding up desperately needed funding for new homes because of Metro Vancouver’s proposal to increase fees for developers.

Mike Hurley is concerned the federal government will hold the housing dollars hostage unless the Metro Vancouver regional district scraps the proposed increase in development fees.

On the other side, a statement from the federal housing minister, Sean Fraser's office said Ottawa wants to make sure the development fees "do not apply to purpose-built rentals and below-market construction."

"We have to make sure the math works for builders to build," Fraser told reporters in Ottawa pushing back on suggestions the cancellation could send a signal to other cities that proposing more fees would lead to Ottawa withholding funding.

Navigating Zero Carbon & Energy Building Code Changes
UDI

On Friday, October 20, UDI will host a one-day workshop to prepare homebuilders for current and future energy and sustainability-related building code updates with a focus on Part 9 buildings.

Last February, the Province confirmed new energy efficiency requirements and an opt-in Zero Carbon Step Code will take effect starting May 1, 2023. The government is establishing province-wide energy performance standards and allowing local governments to mandate GHG emission targets for new buildings.

As a result of these changes, some local governments that have implemented the ESC, have already indicated that they will be increasing their required steps and introducing new GHG reduction targets as early as this year.

The Province itself is planning to mandate that new buildings be net-zero energy-ready by 2032 and have zero carbon emissions by 2030.

The workshop will take place in Surrey and the cost is $395 + GST, including all meals and digital class materials. Registration is available here.
