We have an urgent update, John.
This week, Senate Bill 224, a bill to set the Pennsylvania 2024 presidential Primary date, passed out of the PA House State Government Committee, allowing it to be brought up for a full House Floor vote.
Here is the issue: Republican Rep. Mehaffie introduced an amendment requiring voters to show proof of identification every time they cast a ballot in person.
The reason this bill was introduced was to accommodate voters who observe the Jewish holiday of Passover, which next year conflicts with the current primary date. It is disappointing that the House hijacked this bill to create barriers to the ballot box.
In response, NPP’s CEO Kadida Kenner, was quoted in Spotlight PA stating, “New Pennsylvania Project is always going to be concerned about anything that puts an additional barrier in front of Pennsylvania voters. What we are concerned about as an organization is this is the beginning of how voting rights get chipped away.”
This amendment may be brought up for a vote THIS WEEK, and we need your help to fight back. We are working with our partners to mobilize public action against this bill and make it clear that we won’t stand for these attacks on our democracy. Help us stop this bill from passing the House by rushing $25 or more now →
