The GOP's effort to impeach President Biden is based on nothing.
Despite having no basis in reality, blatant lies and misinformation about the President, his son, and the impeachment effort keep spreading at an alarming rate. And, according to a recent Morning Consult poll, those claims are having an impact – nearly half of all Americans support the impeachment probe.
So how is this happening? We’ll explain more in just a moment, but first, if you want to help Courier and our network of nine newsrooms across the country push back against misinformation, will you pitch in today? [[link removed]]
No one is surprised when far-right propaganda outlets like Fox News, Newsmax, OANN, etc. allow unchecked lying. But the problem isn’t confined to those networks. Even mainstream outlets allow politicians to lie regularly without much pushback.
Recently, in a Meet the Press interview on NBC, Donald Trump claimed four times that Democrats want to kill babies “after birth.”
Moderator Kristen Welker challenged Trump on the claim the first two times, but let it go after that.
While promoting the interview, NBC also used the irresponsible headline: “Trump wants to bring the country together on abortion: ‘Both sides are going to like me.’"
The very notion that an authoritarian like Trump wants to bring the country together is ridiculous.
So what if news organizations took a different approach? What if interviewers made it clear that they would end the interview live, on-air, and ban the participant from any future interviews if they lied — and then actually followed through?
While it’s a nice hypothetical, the reality is the profit incentives for big corporate news organizations aren’t going away any time soon. And that means the unchecked lying probably won’t stop, either.
But here at Courier, we’re doing journalism differently. None of our stories are locked behind paywalls or subscription fees — instead, we rely on contributions from donors like you to help us report the truth and call out misinformation and those who disseminate it.
If you’re tired of corporate media allowing shameless politicians to lie on their airwaves in an attempt to keep profits up, please consider chipping in anything you can to Courier Newsroom today. [[link removed]]
