Team re:power at our annual All Staff Re:treat in Chicago
Hello John ,
Fall is here and, as usual, it serves as the reminder we all need that there is one true constant in life: change. Sometimes change comes in the form of growth — we added our newest staff person Sagal Handulle as our Alumni Community Manager and welcomed two new board members (link). Sometimes change can feel bittersweet — our dear staff Tina Hines, Carin Schiewe, and Victor Suarez transitioned out of re:power this quarter to move on to new adventures. And sometimes change can be overwhelming — this Summer our crew was hard at work with several big in-person trainings including our first ever co-located TrainerCon and PGA train-the-trainer.
For me, change can leave me feeling untethered and searching for ways to bring myself back to center. When I’m looking for grounding, the quickest and easiest way for me is to remind myself of my purpose in this work — creating a different world for my daughter. And I lean in to the immortal words of Maya Angelou who said “When we unite in purpose, we are greater than the sum of our parts.”
With that, I offer you all updates on re:power’s purposeful work this quarter and say — let us move forward together both on purpose and with purpose.

re:power is excited to announce two new additions to our Board of Directors: Kelley Robinson and Angela Ferrell-Zabala, who embody our core values of community, collective action, and abundance through their years-long commitment to organizing for material change in the lives of the most impacted.

We're thrilled to announce our newest staff member, Sagal Handulle! Sagal joined re:power in September 2023 as our first ever Alumni Community Manager. She will be working to deepen our relationship with re:power alumni and help build a tighter network of incredible BIPOC women, trans and gender expansive people of color leaders.

Trainers Convening
In July, we hosted re:power’s first-ever Trainers Convening, or TrainerCon, in Atlanta, GA with 49 trainers in attendance. This was a joint venture between re:power and the Progressive Governance Academy who trained up 30 elected officials to deliver the PGA’s incredible curriculum. The purpose of TrainerCon was to 1) re-orient trainers towards re:power’s new North Star, vision and values, 2) build relationships among trainers within and across program areas, and 3) share learnings and best practices that support the continued growth of all programs. We loved sharing such a meaningful space with our trainers and trainers in attendance reported feeling more connected to re:power and to our vision and mission, and they also loved the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with each other and with our staff.
Partner Spotlight: Boston Mayor’s Office for Immigrant Advancement
Between May and August, we partnered with the Boston Mayor’s Office for Immigrant Advancement (MOIA) to train 15 immigrant residents of the city in grassroots organizing, as part of “Immigrants Lead Boston” (ILB), a program that has been helping immigrant residents of Boston navigate local government for the past 4 years. This year, the Office collaborated with the Movement Building team to reimagine and rebuild the program from scratch.

We had been organizing for years, ready to meet this moment. This included having a number of Senate members and all of the House caucus go through portions of the Progressive Governance Academy curriculum.
