There isn’t a day that passes that I don’t reflect on the honor of having your trust.
For decades it was as your meteorologist, looking out for families in bad weather. And now, it’s with the privilege and responsibility as your representative in my home state and for my hometown.
While it’s not lost on me that the politics of hate and division have taken over the halls of Congress, and the dysfunction of Republican leadership has led to countless near-shutdowns and distractions, I believe the light of tomorrow is brighter. I will never stop believing that our best days are when we work together to solve problems, not rip each other apart over our differences.
I regularly come into the Capitol rotunda and sit by myself at night. I usually sit on the bench right next to the statue of Abraham Lincoln, who also served Illinois in the House of Representatives.
Sometimes I come here and sit for a few minutes. Sometimes I need an hour or more.
And of all the times, I’ve never been joined by another member of Congress. I’d welcome the company of a colleague to break the silence. But the silence of this building really has a lot to say if you take the time to listen.
