Dear Friend,

[ [link removed] ]TAKE ACTION! Tell Congress: Honor Latinas during Hispanic Heritage
Month and every day by advancing equal pay!

This month, Hispanic Heritage Month, we have seen so many beautiful
celebrations of the legacy, power, and contributions of Latino, Latinx,
and Latine communities across the country. [ [link removed] ]But today there is no
celebration. Today is Latina Equal Pay Day – the day we use to rally
against the egregious wage injustices Latinas face in the workforce.

Latinas earn only 52 cents for every $1 paid to white men working
part-time, full-time, and part year. [1] For Latina moms, it’s just 40
cents because in addition to sexism and racism, caregivers face additional
wage discrimination and barriers to employment. [2]

The wage gap is not about a single paycheck, but about the cumulative
economic loss that impacts an entire community. Over the course of the
average Latina’s career, the lost income adds up to over a million dollars
compared to white men! [ [link removed] ]

That’s right, ONE 👏🏼  MILLION👏🏾 DOLLARS👏🏿!

These are dollars Latinas are not able to use to feed their families, put
gas in their cars, pay for housing, secure quality childcare, or put
toward retirement. In fact, women at retirement age face higher levels of
poverty than men. [3] [4]THIS IS NOT OKAY!

[ [link removed] ]In addition to building a care infrastructure, which studies show helps
close the wage gaps, we need Congress to swiftly pass two key pieces of
legislation in order to meaningfully help narrow the wage gap:

* The Paycheck Fairness Act, which would modernize and strengthen the
Equal Pay Act of 1963 to better combat pay discrimination and close
the wage gap, including by protecting workers from retaliation for
discussing pay, banning the use of prior salary history, and codifying
pay data collection and
* The Raise the Wage Act of 2023, which aims to raise the federal
minimum wage to $17 an hour by 2028. This bill will eliminate
subminimum wages for tipped workers, workers with disabilities, and
youth workers, ensuring equal pay for all covered by the Fair Labor
Standards Act.

Latina moms play a vitally important role in our country. We’re caretakers
for our families and we’re in the workforce, making the country strong and
paying billions of dollars in taxes each year.

Latinas are the primary breadwinners in three million U.S. households. [5]
Latino households have a combined $2.6 trillion in U.S. buying power — and
in 86% of those households, a woman is the primary buyer for the home. [5]

College graduation rates for Latinas are growing faster than for any other
group of women. [6] It hurts every family and our entire economy to let
this wage gap continue.

Together, by supporting these policies, we can improve the laws that do
not serve our full communities and pave the way for a more equitable
future where all workers are paid what they rightfully earn. Join us as we
seek justice and equality on Latina Equal Pay Day and all year round.
