John,
With major uncertainty hanging over the House, those jockeying to be the next Speaker are certainly making promises to appease centrist and right-wing Republicans alike.
One issue that unites Republicans is the idea of a closed-door commission to cut our earned benefits, which is included in House Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington’s budget. The Biden administration has correctly called such a commission “a death panel for Medicare and Social Security.”[1]
Already, more than 64,000 people have taken action demanding no closed-door commissions to cut Medicare and Social Security. And the vast majority of the American people agree.
A poll this summer, conducted by Data for Progress, shows that 92% of voters want to see NO CUTS made to Social Security benefits. In fact, majorities of Democrats, Republicans, and independents all want to see Social Security benefits increased.[2]
We know we can increase Social Security benefits while extending the lifespan of the trust fund when the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes, just like working people already do.
Sign now to tell Congress: Reject closed-door commissions that cut Social Security and Medicare!
The only reason to cut Social Security and Medicare behind closed doors is so that the American people don’t know who to blame. If Republicans want a debate about the future of our earned benefits, let’s have that debate in the light of day and with input from the American people.
Thank you for taking action today,

John,
Kevin McCarthy is offering as many bribes as he can think of to convince the hard-right fringe of his caucus to avert a government shutdown this weekend. He’s offered them an impeachment investigation. He’s offered border wall funding. And, he’s offered them trillions of dollars in cuts to critical services―not to address the country’s deficit, as they claim, but to pay for an extension of the Trump-GOP Tax Scam.
Now, included in the Republican House Budget is a commission to cut Social Security and Medicare.[1] And, while they won’t come out and say that the purpose of their closed-door commission is to cut our earned benefits, the Biden White House has called it out for what it is: “a death panel for Medicare and Social Security.”[2]
Strengthening Social Security and Medicare doesn’t require closed-door commissions or cuts to our earned benefits. All we need is for the wealthy to pay more of their fair share―and when they do that, we can afford to both expand benefits AND extend the lifespan of the trust fund.
Sign now to tell Congress: No closed-door commissions that will cut Social Security and Medicare!
In addition to this closed-door commission, Republicans propose cutting nearly $2 trillion from Medicaid―kicking millions of working people off their health insurance. They want to cut by half a service that provides healthy fruits and vegetables for pregnant mothers.
As Republicans continue to flounder in their attempts to pass anything meaningful before a looming government shutdown, let’s make sure McCarthy doesn’t offer his far-right fringe a Social Security-cutting commission next!
Sign now to tell Congress to reject any commission that debates the future of Social Security behind closed doors without input from voters.
Thank you for taking action today to fight for the future of our earned benefits.
