Stories of Struggle, Triumph and Resilience
Those with lived experience share how their lives and those of their family members have been impacted by substance use and addiction.
We are one month away from cheering on our 2023 TCS NYC Marathon Partners for Hope team as they set up at the starting line. Our team members play a vital role in our mission – their openness in sharing their personal stories and their fundraising efforts help us support more families with our valuable resources.
Runner Spotlight: Kayla
Kayla Akkaya is a returning member of our Partners for Hope Team. She is inspired to continue running with the Partnership to honor the memory of her boyfriend Kevin, who she lost to substance use and addiction.
“I run to help end the stigma that affects those suffering with the disease of addiction.
I run to help those who need help getting treatment and support.
I run so whoever needs help can get it, no matter the circumstances.
I run so every person can get access to effective treatment, not next week or next month, but today!
Angelica Franco is running her first marathon and we are honored she chose to run it as a Partner for Hope. Angelica has personally experienced the impact of mental health and addiction in her family and she understands the significance of family support for a loved one struggling.
“I wish my parents had the opportunity to reach out to an organization like the Partnership to get support and guidance when they needed it... The work that the Partnership does is very close to my heart. I have had first-hand experience with addiction in my family and know how hard it can be to support a loved one with addiction – especially when there are limited financial resources.” – Angelica
