Supporter,

Killer whales and salmon are natural wonders of the Pacific Northwest. Beyond the beauty of their iconic leaps and massive migrations, they are the key to sustaining most wildlife in this region, as well as the Indigenous Tribes who have depended on them and formed their ways of life for centuries.

Yet these vital species are dying at record rates because of irresponsible dam development–and it all goes back to where the rivers flow and who controls them.

Four dams built on the Lower Snake River are decimating the salmon population and starving the resident orcas who feed off them. But just last week, our fight against these dams and their developers – one of the longest legal battles in our organization's history – reached a new turning point. 3,4

The Biden Administration just mandated its agencies must explore how to save these salmon. We've already been fighting a lawsuit for over 40 years pushing back that any developer's plans without dam removal is no serious plan at all. The momentum is here to finally remove these dams and save the salmon and orcas.

SAVE THE ORCAS

The government has lost five times in court because their plans are inadequate, illegal, and failed to recover these once fabled salmon and steelhead runs, and their short sighted proposals have cost tens of billions of dollars.5 We need to act immediately in this window where public officials are recognizing the absurd destruction of these dams.

This preservation work is vital, and the fights are decades long, taking all of our resources to support the lawyers, activists, and coalition partners we need in place to stop developers from inflicting this irreparable harm on the environment and critical species.

We recently rallied with our coalition in the Snake River Campaign Journey, an indigenous-led trip to make the voices of people heard across the Pacific Northwest to call for the removal of these dams. We have the attention of these communities, the Biden administration, and now we just need you and your support to take our work even further and finally get our rivers back the way they are meant to be.
