As the Shadyside university grapples with a multimillion-dollar deficit, it has said little about such practices, but some faculty have spoken out on financial processes they describe as “god-awful” and “always an adventure.”

Mayor Ed Gainey's 2024 budget proposal includes money for 50 fewer police officers than before, but Deputy Mayor Jake Pawlak said that reflects hiring changes, and the city will work to raise the number by 2027.
The $73 million contract between Allegheny County and a private juvenile detention center operator stipulates that the county will pay a fixed amount for each bed in the facility, regardless of whether the beds are in use. Read more on this provision among others.
