Yesterday, Kevin McCarthy was voted out of his position as Speaker of the House. It was a difficult decision but the right one. I did not vote for Kevin McCarthy for Speaker because he had a reputation as a dishonest dealer and had already shown disdain and distrust for the People’s House. I voted him out because from day one as Speaker, he showed why he could not be trusted - going back on his word and refusing to bring the parties together for effective fulfillment of our duties. We needed reassurance that the House would be able to function and deliver for our constituents - Kevin McCarthy was unable to make those promises.

We had to stand on the side of democracy and against extremism. 

Americans deserve a Speaker who can govern, protect democracy, and defend our freedom from extremism and tyrannical rule. Kevin McCarthy failed on all fronts, and many Republicans are furious that Democrats held him accountable. Now, the NRCC is continuing to peddle excuses and use Democrats as scapegoats to cover up the failures of their own party's leadership. They’re targeting members of the Problem Solvers Caucus - a group of members who promised to look past partisan fighting - as an act of retaliation. 

I believe that as representatives of our districts, we owe it to the American people to deliver for them. The reason I voted to remove McCarthy wasn’t an act of partisanship, it was a choice to protect our democracy and prevent the rise of extremism. I would have voted for any Speaker candidate - Republican or Democrat - willing to lead with integrity and uphold our Congressional institution. NRCC attacks on me and my fellow Problem Solvers Caucus members for voting to protect this country from extremism cut to the heart of what is wrong with today’s Republican party.
