Over the past few days, we have seen the Republican Party spectacularly fall on its own sword, and Matt Gaetz has led the charge. The arrival of Trump in 2016 allowed a new, toxic brand of conservatism to bubble up to the surface of the Republican party. The politicians of the New Right have no respect for law and order – they barely have respect for their own party. As Gaetz told Jake Tapper last Sunday, "we need to move on with a new leadership that can be trustworthy." Clearly, the Republicans have nothing to offer on this front. Even Gaetz, who has so heroically freed his party from McCarthy’s mediocre reign, can hardly qualify for either leadership or trustworthiness. The House Ethics Committee is investigating Gaetz for everything from sexual misconduct, to drug use, to misappropriation of government funds. If MAGA-Republicans start soliciting applications for mascot, Gaetz is wholly qualified. However, it’s obvious no one would let him near the speakership with a 10-foot pole. In fact, Gaetz himself may even be ousted from the House if the Ethics Committee finds him guilty. He joins the eminent George Santos, who has been federally indicted and yet has kept his seat through a similar sleight of hand with the Ethics Committee. The Republican majority has never been more flimsy, nor quite so full of liars, predators, and charlatans. While Republicans are wrangling their crazies, Democrats are focused on the big problems: protecting our democracy, keeping our communities healthy and safe, and improving the economy. Chip in now to build the momentum we need to end the MAGA era in the House of Representatives, Take Back the House and appoint true leaders to lead our legislative branch of government. |
