MARCH ON is dedicated to increasing voter turnout and driving Democrats to the polls. Our data-driven solutions led the way for progressive victories in 2020 and 2022. Now, we're gearing up to stop Trump’s comeback in 2024.

Dear Friend,

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we're highlighting Hispanic and Latinx women political leaders across Virginia and their fight to protect abortion access in their state.

Today, we’re featuring former State Delegate and candidate for Lieutenant Governor, Hala Ayala!

Hala Ayala won her election to the Virginia House of Delegates in 2017, defeating an 8-year Republican incumbent to become one of the first two Latinx women elected to the Virginia House, alongside Elizabeth Guzmán.

Ayala got her start in local politics as an unrelenting activist for women’s rights – and in 2017, she organized Virginia’s participation in the Women’s March following the election of Donald Trump. While in office, Ayala successfully led the charge for Virginia to become the final state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment.

During her time as Delegate, Ayala also fought to pass legislation to expand Medicaid, strengthen background check laws on gun purchases, and safeguard reproductive rights – a critical issue now, as Virginia is the last state in the South without significant restrictions or bans on abortion.

In 2021, Ayala won her primary election to become the Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia. But after extremist Glenn Youngkin’s slim victory that fall, Virginians’ fundamental rights – including abortion access – are now at risk.

Friend, Democratic candidates in Virginia need our help to secure a pro-choice majority this fall and block Youngkin’s abortion ban!
