Hala Ayala won her election to the Virginia House of Delegates in 2017, defeating an 8-year Republican incumbent to become one of the first two Latinx women elected to the Virginia House, alongside Elizabeth Guzmán.
Ayala got her start in local politics as an unrelenting activist for women’s rights – and in 2017, she organized Virginia’s participation in the Women’s March following the election of Donald Trump. While in office, Ayala successfully led the charge for Virginia to become the final state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment.
During her time as Delegate, Ayala also fought to pass legislation to expand Medicaid, strengthen background check laws on gun purchases, and safeguard reproductive rights – a critical issue now, as Virginia is the last state in the South without significant restrictions or bans on abortion.
