“Kevin McCarthy’s run as Speaker is finished.”[1]

Is that a good thing?  Time will tell.  I am excited about the possibility of a new Speaker though, and I’ll tell you a couple of reasons why.

First: what led to this?  This past Saturday, Speaker McCarthy relied on Democrat votes to pass a "continuing resolution."

What is a continuing resolution? It is a bill to continue the level of funding from the prior year’s appropriations without making the hard choices to pass a new budget.

Last year's budget was developed by a Democrat-controlled House, Senate, and President where they significantly increased spending that we do not have. Is that really the best we can do?  No wonder all but one Democrat voted for it.  It was essentially their bill, extended to November.

90 Republicans, including Maryland's Congressman Andy Harris, voted against the continuing resolution.  Good for them.

Do you remember Speaker John Boehner from 2015?  He kept passing "continuing resolutions" and did not curb the debt or bring down spending, even though we had a Republican Senate and a Republican House at the time.  The Republicans failed to challenge President Obama on anything and failed to lead.

Do you remember Speaker Tim Ryan when Trump was President?  He was Speaker when Republicans held the House, the Senate, and had Trump as President.  We could have done so many good things for our country and exposed the Democrats for working against America. We didn't, and we failed to lead again.

While the Speaker-Ryan Congress did pass a tax cut and try to repeal Obamacare, they left all funding for Planned Parenthood intact, didn’t fund the border wall or additional border security, and continued to spend more money than we have.

Unfortunately, Speaker Ryan kept passing "continuing resolutions" (CR) and wanted President Trump to wait until the CR expired to get the positive changes for America that he wanted.  Instead, time ran out, and we lost the House for the next two years.  Again, wasted opportunity and a failure.

Now we have a Republican House with a Democrat-controlled Senate and Presidency.  While Republicans can’t expect make every change we would like, we should at least force major issues and go to the American people for support.

For instance, everyone knows the border is failing.  Even the Governor of New York is crying uncle and wants help from President Biden to deal with illegal aliens overrunning her state.[2]

Why pass a "continuing resolution" without addressing the human catastrophes where fentanyl freely crosses the border, human trafficking is perpetuated, and people in record numbers come and stay in this country illegally?  We need leadership in DC that will take a stand.

If I was serving as Congressman, I would not have voted for the for the "continuing resolution."  Congress had time, but did not take the effort or show the leadership needed to develop spending bills that the American people want and would demand if given the choice.

$33 Trillion in debt is irresponsible.  Just paying the billions of dollars of interest on the debt is a huge part of the spending budget.  Maybe conservatives could not completely stop the overspending, but we could have highlighted major issues and worked for real solutions.

The real fight is with President Biden and Democrat legislators. They are bankrupting America, making us weaker at home and abroad, not helping people get back to work, and allowing a porous border that is literally killing Americans.  Look at the chart on the right; we cannot afford to not fight this incredible escalation in spending.

Ronald Reagan indicated that, "Man is not free unless government is limited....As government expands, liberty contracts." This spending is just a part of the picture showing how big the government is getting, and how it is restricting our liberty now and into the future through taxes and tighter controls.

While I likely would not have voted to remove Speaker McCarthy, a new Republican Speaker could be just what our country needs to actually tackle these issues through the budget process.

At the end of this year, a huge omnibus bill is planned that will give the spending-and-debt-hungry Democrat leaders all they want.  Let's hope the new Speaker and the Republicans in the House take leadership and offer a better solution, one that the American people can get behind.

These are interesting times that we are living in. Thank you for doing your part by supporting good candidates, praying for our country, and working for conservative causes that will actually help our families.

May God bless you, and may God continue to bless our great country,

Neil C. Parrott, P.E.
