Dear John,

Heads up, we have an exciting event on the horizon with our friends at Penn LDI. On October 6, a virtual seminar on Health Equity and the Role of Racism-Conscious Policymaking will be offered in connection with our October issue on racism and health.
Racism, Power, and Health Equity
Political power is a determinant of health equity, and imbalances in this power shape conditions that influence health and well-being, like housing conditions.

In her article in the October 2023 Structural Racism In Health issue, Jamila Michener documents a series of interviews with tenant organizers in racially and economically marginalized communities.

She analyzes the results of seventy-nine semi structured interviews with tenants, and finds that tenant organizers exercised their political power through direct action and local policy change.

Direct action, in the form of protests, rallies, and rent strikes put direct pressure on entities like landlords and government officials to improve living conditions.

Local policy change was driven through "strategic institutional negotiation" and an active campaign.

Michener concludes that organizers can contribute to achieving health equity, and that health equity researchers should highlight the political agency of race-class marginalized populations.

For more on this paper, listen to an episode of A Health Podyssey featuring author Jamila Michener and Health Affairs Editor-in-Chief Alan Weil.

If you missed it, listen to the fourth episode with Nicole Christian-Brathwaite.

The October 2023 issue of Health Affairs covers the theme of Tackling Structural Racism In Health.

In conjunction with the issue's release, we will be premiering a short film entitled "Tackling Structural Racism in Health: A Conversation."

We convened a panel of experts, including Dr. Michael Cary, Dr. Chanelle Diaz, and Dr. Siobhan Wescott, to discuss ideas from the October 2023 journal issue on systemic racism and health care.

Topics include immigration, AI, and the interplay between policy and lived experience in health.

Watch the short film to learn more about how structural racism manifests in health and health care.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we're highlighting influential Hispanic and Latino voices and organizations who have made an impact on health equity and policy.

In 2000, a Steering Committee of the National Congress for Hispanic Mental Health formed the National Latino Behavioral Health Association (NLBHA) to serve as a voice for Latino populations in behavioral health, and to raise awareness of the disparities in access, utilization, practiced-based research, and adequately trained personnel.

As part of its mission, NLBHA provides scholarships in collaboration with the Institute of Mexicans Living Abroad (IMLA)/Instituto de los Mexicanos en el Exterior (IME) to Mexican students pursuing a college degree in behavioral health.
