Building Power in Policy Advocacy: Centering Lived Experiences

The effects of federal policies implemented at state and local levels have direct impact on millions of working people, children, youth, immigrants, and families. Yet the often-exclusionary practices of our policy development and policymaking have led to systemically exclusionary, inequitable, and frequently racist programs.

The need to ensure that both policymakers and the broader social and economic justice ecosystem prioritize centering authentic and sustainable collaborations with individuals who have lived experiences is paramount to our collective efforts to transform systems, structures, and processes. This is an important catalyst for real change that centers people, their lived expertise, equity, our economy, and democracy.
