While the programs that make our schools better, our health care accessible, and our streets safer are scraping the bottom of the barrel for funding, every year, HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS of dollars are funneled into the Pentagon.

Billions of dollars of that budget are often wasted on administrative inefficiencies, like $640 toilet seats and $37 screws. These line items underscore a systemic problem of wasteful spending.

Every dollar poured into ineffective combat ships or redundant nuclear weapons doesn't merely fuel an arms race, it's also a dollar not invested in critically needed social programs—programs that could combat rising income inequality, bolster education, and increase access to health care. The American people should come first, and it's time the Pentagon—not essential services—saw budget cuts.
