I am pleased to share that the resolution that averted the GOP's government shutdown attempts also secured funding for Whatcom residents impacted by the Nooksack River floods in 2021.
The shutdown put FEMA's disaster relief budget in jeopardy, leaving an amount too low to cover the response to a single significant hurricane — let alone to concurrent and compounding climate crises we are still working to help our communities recover from. We cannot allow the folks in the floodplain between Everson and Sumas to wait any longer.
I am grateful we were able to secure this funding for Whatcom flood victims, and have to admit it is reassuring that even in the midst of the MAGA extremists' attempt to thwart our government — Democrats are still making progress for our constituents.
While I am unsure what FEMA's timeline will be, my current estimate is just a few weeks. As I told the folks in Bellingham: As soon as they get the money, we will be working seven days a week to get the money out. That is a promise.
More soon,
Rick
