The largest healthcare strike in U.S. history

Kaiser Permanente workers on strike

More than 75,000 Kaiser Permanente employees walked off the job early this morning after their contract expired. That includes more than 3,800 members of OPEIU Local 2 in the DC region. An overwhelming 98% of OPEIU Local 2 members at Kaiser voted yes to authorize a strike last month. OPEIU members are rallying this morning at Kaiser Permanente in Springfield, VA as the strike gets under way nationwide.

Separately, rehabilitation therapists at Kaiser Permanente the Baltimore-Washington region voted in favor of authorizing an unfair labor practice strike — a result of the same managerial refusal to bargain in good faith.

Commercial cleaners rally ahead of strike vote

As the October 15 contract expiration looms for 9,100 commercial cleaners in the DC region, both sides remain far apart on negotiations. On Monday commercial cleaners with 32BJ SEIU rallied in downtown DC.

“No one wants to strike, but we are ready to strike if employers keep pushing cuts that cleaners can’t afford,” said 32BJ Executive Vice President Jaime Contreras. “These workers were considered essential during the pandemic, but the industry is treating them like they’re disposable when they are key to downtown’s recovery.”

National Nurses United opposes DC bill B25-0430, the Nurse Licensure Compact

The District of Columbia Nurses Association and the National Nurses Organizing
Committee, both affiliates of National Nurses United, urge the DC Council to
reject the Nurse Licensure Compact and vote against bill B25-0430. The Compact
is unnecessary and jeopardizes patient care, local nurse jobs, and DC autonomy. Read the fact sheet.

Take action to support nurses at GWU Hospital

The safety and well-being of both patients and healthcare professionals are paramount in any healthcare setting. However, recent incidents at George Washington University Hospital (GWUH) have left nurses, hospital staff, and members of the community deeply concerned about safety. Sign the petition.
