Jack, the IRS is finally taking steps to hold wealthy tax evaders accountable. Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), the IRS has announced plans to pursue 1,600 millionaires and 75 large businesses that owe hundreds of millions in back taxes. This is a significant move, especially considering the $38 million already recovered from high-income earners earlier this year.

For decades, Republicans in Congress have worked tirelessly to defund and demonize the IRS. This has led to severe budget cuts, leaving the agency overburdened and understaffed. The result? A disproportionate focus on auditing the poor and middle class, while wealthy tax evaders slip through the cracks.
The Inflation Reduction Act has provided $80 billion in funding to the IRS, enabling it to enhance enforcement efforts and improve services for everyday taxpayers. This includes reducing call times, processing returns faster, and issuing refunds more quickly. In fact, IRS phone assistance increased by over 2 million calls compared to last year.
As some politicians continue to push to defund the IRS to protect their wealthy donors, we must ensure they pay their fair share. We must demand that Congress increase, not cut, funding for the IRS.
