The State of Maine sits on the unceded land of the Wabanaki Nations, the People of the Dawn. The Wabanaki are the original people of this place, and have long fought for fairness, justice, and the recognition of their inherent right to sovereignty.

Monday, October 9, is Indigenous Peoples’ Day – and the Wabanaki Alliance is holding a rally outside of the State House in Augusta at 9:30 AM in support of Wabanaki sovereignty and Question 6 on the November ballot. When: Monday, October 9, at 9:30 AM.
Where: Maine State House, Augusta. We’ll be gathering in the space between the State House [[link removed]] and the Burton M. Cross Office Building [[link removed]] . Please respond to this email if you need additional help with directions.
Who: The Wabanaki Alliance Coalition and supporters of the movement for fairness for the Wabanaki.
What: Rally for Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Due to legislation passed in 1980, the Wabanaki Nations in Maine are denied the same right to sovereignty and self-governance afforded to other federally recognized tribes in the United States, an injustice that has caused lagging economic growth for the Wabanaki Nations and surrounding rural communities.

In addition to the effort to restore the Wabanaki Nations’ inherent sovereignty, we’ll also be showing support for Question 6 -- one of eight referendum questions that will be on the ballot on November 7.

Question 6 would require the State of Maine to print the full Constitution – helping to build accuracy and transparency in government. The state’s treaty obligations to the Wabanaki Nations are currently omitted from printed copies of the Maine Constitution, even though the Wabanaki people were written into the document. We can honor this shared history together by once again including treaty obligations in printed copies of the Maine Constitution. You can learn more about Question 6 here [[link removed]].
