Daily Docket — Tuesday, Oct. 3

Here are some recent updates.

  • A federal court held a hearing today on the three proposed congressional maps in Alabama that the court-appointed special master submitted. All three contain a second opportunity district for Black voters. A decision on which plan to accept is expected by the end of the week.

  • Also today, the U.S. Department of Justice deployed Civil Rights Division staff to monitor Alaska's election to ensure compliance with the language accessibility requirements of the Voting Rights Act.

  • On Monday, an Idaho judge dismissed a state-level lawsuit challenging a set of Idaho voter suppression laws that eliminate the use of student IDs as an acceptable form of identification for voter registration and in-person voting. A federal lawsuit challenging the ID requirements is ongoing.

  • Calls for hand counting ballots have continued in recent weeks in states throughout the country, with conservative activists and elected officials pushing for the complex practice despite its clear problems.
