Dear Neighbor,
This past weekend, we avoided an extreme MAGA government shutdown. Despite the reckless actions of Speaker McCarthy and House Republicans, Democrats delivered on legislation that will keep our federal government running while we work to pass legislation that will fully fund government programs and institutions for fiscal year 2024.
The bill we passed will ensure our troops and federal employees are paid and will keep the programs California families rely on – like SNAP benefits – up and running.
Instead of working with Democrats from the start on practical solutions, Republicans threatened to shut down the government unless they got their wish list of extremist polices.
Luckily, we didn’t cave. We prevented them from passing their backwards agenda – including their efforts to criminalize abortion, defund public schools, and pass barbaric, inhumane border policies reminiscent of the Trump Administration.
However, our fight to keep MAGA extremist policies out of the federal government’s budget is just beginning.
Congress has less than 50 days to pass legislation that will fully fund our government. And just 48 hours after Democrats voted to save us from a shutdown, Republicans in the House are right back to old tactics.
In fact, they are too busy fighting amongst each other over the Speaker’s chair to work with Democrats at all!
They are wasting time playing political games instead of working on long-term solutions for our government. As we’ve seen these past few weeks, Republicans’ inability to govern is a threat to our country. And the American people are sick and tired of it.
I will continue to fight on behalf of the American people. And I will keep pushing my colleagues on the other side of the aisle to do the same.
