AARP’s State Scorecard on Long-Term Care Highlights Workforce Issues
The AARP LTSS State Scorecard comes out every three years and is a compilation of state data and analysis that assesses and ranks every state’s long-term services and supports (LTSS) system. The just-released 2023 Scorecard includes a new set of measures related to the direct care workforce, including states’ efforts to recruit enough workers and improve service quality and workforce stability. The Scorecard has long included two indicators focused on nursing that pertain to family caregiver supports: nurse practitioner scope of practice and nurse task delegation. You can explore the report and find out how well your state’s LTSS system serves older adults,
people with disabilities, and family caregivers.

Our featured equity-minded nurse this week is Beth Toner, RN, MSN, MJ. She talks about her place as a white nurse in a world shaped by systems of oppression. “Taking time to do my homework” on the lived experiences of people “who don’t look like me” is one way she practices equity in her work, as well as being willing to be called out when she makes a misstep and learn from it. Toner serves as Director, Program Communications at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
