ProPublica just uncovered that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas
secretly attended donor summits hosted by the Koch brothers.^1 This is yet
another Clarence Thomas scandal that could seriously impact a critically
important SCOTUS case.

SCOTUS is set to hear a case brought against the Consumer Financial
Protection Bureau (CFPB) by predatory payday lenders and the banking
industry — and the case is backed by a right-wing advocacy group funded by
the Kochs.^2 Thomas' connection with the Kochs is yet another example of
why SCOTUS desperately needs ethics reforms.

The CFPB is a federal agency created after the ‘08 crash thanks to the
leadership of Senator Elizabeth Warren. The CFPB holds banks and financial
institutions accountable when they take advantage of consumers. Now, in
one SCOTUS case, Clarence Thomas, the Kochs, and Trump’s right-wing judges
could destroy the consumer protections Senator Warren and Democrats fought
so hard for after the economic crisis.

The slew of Clarence Thomas’ ethics issues are not minor, isolated
incidents. To describe Thomas’s string of behaviors that likely broke the
law, experts and retired judges have used words like INCOMPREHENSIBLE,
HIDING, VIOLATION, and CORRODES PUBLIC TRUST.^3,4

Thomas should be nowhere near this CFPB case before the Supreme Court, but
he’s planning to sit for oral arguments on October 3. Congress needs to
act now!
