The budget fight is not over and Republican extremists are planning to slash nearly two trillion dollars from Medicaid, and even more troublesome, they’re scheming to establish a secretive commission with the power to make deep cuts to Social Security and Medicare.
This closed-door commission is nothing but a smoke screen, a ruse to avoid the backlash they’d receive from millions of Americans whose lifelines are Social Security and Medicare.
Politicians and their rich backers who stand to gain from these cutbacks want to avoid public scrutiny for depriving Americans of the benefits they’ve earned over decades of hard work.
We have seen time and time again that when we rally together and raise our voices, politicians listen. If we flood our representatives with demands to reject this covert commission and any attempts to cut these essential programs, they will know America knows their secret plan -- and that might just be enough to stop it.
Send Congress a message now: Do NOT participate in a closed-door commission to cut Social Security! And reject any plan that slashes Medicaid!
A closed-door commission is inherently undemocratic and detrimental to the principles of transparency and accountability that are foundational to our nation. The most troubling part about this secret commission is how no one looking for cuts has introduced any bill to make the wealthy pay their rightful share.
It’s a glaring truth that if the rich contributed at the same rate as the rest of us, we could not only maintain but even expand Social Security. Instead, these Republicans would rather see vulnerable American families suffer, while their deep-pocketed donors remain untouched by tax reforms.
We have the power to shift the narrative and protect our benefits, but we need to act collectively. If we don’t speak up now, these decisions will be made behind closed doors, and our future will be at the mercy of politicians serving their own interests.
