Community Protection Program Project Announcement
We are excited to announce that DDA is beginning a project to modernize the supports available to individuals who qualify for the Community Protection Program.
The Community Protection Program started 25 years ago in response to an intentionally set fire that resulted in the death of two people. In response, the Washington State Legislature passed a law creating a program to support individuals with a history of behaviors that posed a danger to the community. Since that time, we have learned much about supporting individuals with the behaviors identified in statute. Over the last several years, DDA has been collecting information and speaking with participants and interested community members to identify aspects of the program that are successful and need to continue as well as areas that need upgrading.
The Community Protection Program has been looked to as a model to emulate by states and DDA will to continue to push our programs to be at the forefront of how to support people with complex needs. To stay at the leading edge of supporting people with complex behaviors, DDA will evolve programs with input from participants and the community. This involves looking at the tools that professionals use for evaluation, how treatment and support options are delivered and how to ensure the individual is at the heart of all the services they receive.
DDA is at the beginning of a process through which thoughtful changes with input from participants and the community will be used to modernize this program. While program changes are contemplated, the Community Protection Program will continue to deliver the supports that keep participants healthy and stable at home. DDA is committed to maintaining services and that all changes are made smoothly and with input from the individuals receiving the services.
Please watch for updates and opportunities to participate as we continue to gather information.
