In what could only be described as a momentary, fleeting fit of judicial restraint given his well-documented aversion to ethics, Justice Clarence Thomas recused himself from a high court decision that ultimately turned down a bid by attorney John Eastman to erase court rulings that described him as a linchpin in Trump’s attempts to illegally overturn the 2020 election. The court’s decision essentially enshrines rulings by a federal district judge in California that found Eastman’s emails contained evidence of a likely crime related to Trump’s efforts.

The so-called Joint Legislative Committee on Government Operations — or Gov Ops for short — is empowered to seize “any document or system of record” from anyone who works in or with state and local government during its investigations. Moreover, Gov Ops staff will be authorized to enter “any building or facility” owned or leased by a state or non-state entity without a judicial warrant. Given the increasingly fascist nature of the GOP, these developments should send a shiver down all of our spines. If the jackbooted thugs are coming to America, this is how they first lace up.
