The joy of coordinating a major league surprise — and how you can help

Support for Poynter comes from all different kinds of people — including pro baseball players.
Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Pete Fairbanks was one of the masterminds behind a recent surprise for students from The Write Field ([link removed]) , a mentoring program serving Black and Hispanic young men in Pinellas (Florida) County.
Poynter's Andrew DeLong wrote about the big reveal ([link removed]) , in which program participants were gifted with hand-selected shoes and other swag from individual Rays players.
The Write Field ([link removed]) , a partnership between Poynter and the Tampa Bay Rays Foundation, has served more than 430 young men in 13 years, giving them a chance to explore their world through writing.
If you'd like to make the day of the journalists supported by Poynter all year — like the Tampa Bay Rays did for our young writers — please consider making a gift to Poynter ([link removed]) . Donations of $50 or more with "Gift from the Heart" in the notes section will be recognized at our annual fundraising gala, the Bowtie Ball ([link removed]) , on Nov. 18.
For more ways to support Poynter's initiatives like Write Field — and give your own career a gift through one of our training opportunities— read on.

Lead with Influence (2023)
Online group seminar, Nov. 6-27
This four-session virtual workshop is especially designed to help women and nonbinary journalists in the industry use their social capital to lead with influence.
"It's easy to get caught up in planning and execution and forget that the key to building successful projects is actually relationships," said Malarie Gokey, a director at Insider and recent Poynter alum. "Lead with Influence reminded me just how important it is to take the time to do the groundwork and build a solid foundation of support with colleagues before getting into the project itself. Over these four weeks, I learned strategies that will help me get the buy-in I need to succeed."
This is an interactive, virtual training for leaders who manage big responsibilities — such as processes, products or platforms — without direct reports.
Apply by Oct. 16. ([link removed])
Cost: $600.
