Hi friend,

We wanted to drop a quick note about the passing of Senator Dianne Feinstein and the appointment of Laphonza Butler to serve out her term.

California Environmental Voters is immensely grateful for Senator Feinstein’s trailblazing and storied service to San Francisco, California, and our entire country. Throughout her remarkable career, she broke barriers for women in politics and left a tremendous legacy of environmental accomplishments, from her work to protect millions of acres of California deserts, to safeguarding the Pacific coast from oil drilling to her landmark legislation on cleaner cars, and more.

At the same time, we are also excited about Laphonza Butler’s historic appointment to the U.S. Senate and extend our congratulations to her. She will be California’s first openly LGBTQ+ Senator and only the second Black woman to represent our state in the Senate. As president of EMILY’s List and a former labor leader, Butler is a known advocate and we look forward to working with her on the progressive values she’s represented throughout her career.
