Radical Republicans nearly shut down the government this weekend in their attempts to slash government spending that included pro-climate initiatives.
Hours before their time was out, they managed to pass a stop-gap measure that will continue funding the government for a little over a month. Let’s be clear: this is only a brief reprieve.
John, the fight continues, because on the floor of the house this week is the Energy-Water appropriations bill. Republicans have written this bill to take a dramatic cut out of the Department of Energy’s programs to implement the Inflation Reduction Act and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
If this bill passes, the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy would get a $500 million cut, which is 14% of their total budget. This would drastically reduce their ability to implement pro-climate policies. The bill would also rescind $5 billion from the Inflation Reduction Act that is meant to provide rebates and incentives for American families looking to reduce their energy use. In other words, this legislation would increase energy bills for the average American.
