Working Families Party

John,

Right now, the United Auto Workers are on a historic strike.

The reason why is simple. Despite making record profits of over a quarter of a trillion dollars in the last 10 years, the Big Three automotive companies — GM, Stellantis, and Ford — refuse to pay workers what they’re worth.

In fact, while CEO pay is up 40% in four years, workers are making $10 less than they did in 2007 when you adjust for inflation.

United Auto Workers deserve better than this — all workers do. If you agree, then come support the strike at a picket line near you. Union members are on the picket line 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and you can make a real impact by joining them — as you are, or with people, pizza, water, snacks, or solidarity.

No picket lines in your area? You can help strengthen the movement by joining or hosting a community canvass at a local Ford, GM, or Stellantis dealership or repair shop. Find a canvass near you or check out the full instructions and resources for how to do host one here.

When the Great Recession of 2008 hit the auto industry hard, autoworkers made major sacrifices to help keep these companies afloat, including taking massively reduced pay, eliminated pensions, job cuts, and more. Meanwhile, these corporations were bailed out by the government, receiving billions of taxpayer dollars.

When times were tough, workers were willing to do what it took to keep this industry alive. But when their employers are making money hand over fist while union members are struggling, our movement has to take a stand.

That’s why for the first time in history, the United Auto Workers went on strike against the Big Three automakers all at once. And they plan to stay strong until they win a fair contract that includes:

  • Fair pay with cost of living adjustments to protect from rising prices,
  • An end to substandard wages and benefits for recently hired workers,
  • Increased job security for all auto workers, and
  • A just transition to electric vehicles, to make sure that the green jobs of the future are good, union jobs.

We’ve seen workers on strike win major victories this year, including Teamsters working for UPS and members of the Writers Guild of America just last week.

But victories like these can only happen with the support of people like you, showing companies that you’re on the side of workers. Can you join a UAW picket line near you this week to show the Big Three the strength of this movement?
