Dear John,
I am writing to share some bittersweet news: After spending the last two years with all of you as the president of EMILYs List, I will be stepping down to accept California Gov. Newsom’s nomination to the U.S. Senate.
I am honored to be asked to serve as a representative for a state I have long called home and humbled by the Governor's trust. Sen. Dianne Feinstein's leadership and legacy are immeasurable. I will do my best to honor her by devoting my time and energy to serving the people of California and the people of this great nation.
At a time in our country when our fundamental freedoms are under attack and our rights are being undermined at every turn, it's critical that California's next U.S. senator be ready on day one for the fight ahead. I am grateful to be able to hit the ground running, thanks to the meaningful preparation I’ve gained leading this organization for the last two years.
I am so proud of the work we have done, and I am deeply grateful to our Board Chair Rebecca Haile and all of our board, our staff, our candidates, and our incredible community of donors who work every day to ensure more Democratic pro-choice women can run, win, and change the world.
I look forward to seeing what this strong pro-choice community accomplishes in the future. Thank you for the opportunity to lead this powerful, dynamic, change-making organization for the last two years. And trust in the fact that the Senate will soon have another Democratic pro-choice woman within its ranks.
For women and families, for workers and unions, for struggling parents waiting for our leaders to bring opportunity back to their homes, for all of California, I'm ready to serve.
In solidarity,
Laphonza Butler
