** An Important Ask
------------------------------------------------------------
============================================================
Dear Media Activist,
I’m reaching out during FAIR’s fall fund drive with an update on FAIR’s financials. If you’re a regular reader of independent news, you’ve probably seen many other important nonprofit outlets reaching out for help during these rocky economic times. Unfortunately, FAIR is in a similar boat.
We recently closed our books for the fiscal year, and we ended 2022–2023 about $150,000 in the red. This is our second year of being at a more than $100,000 deficit. Between 2019 and 2021, we got lucky with some very generous contributions and estate settlements. They’ve given us enough of a cushion to not be in full crisis-mode right now, but the money is dwindling fast, and individual donations are about $100,000 down from where we need them to be.
** We need to ask for as much support as possible during these next few months. ([link removed])
We’re working hard to apply for more grants from aligned foundations, but the world of progressive philanthropy is small, and budgets are tight across the board. Most funders are not interested in taking on new grantees at this time. Individuals’ support has historically been a significantly larger part of our revenue, anyway.
Our organization has been around since 1986—we’ve experienced our share of ups and downs, and part of this is just the nature of being a small nonprofit. In fact, the post-Covid economy has led to a dip in giving across the entire nonprofit sector.
We can brace for crises here and there, but we frankly can’t afford to continue this way for the next few years.
We understand that these difficult economic times are affecting everyone, from small individual donors, to large foundations. We know you’ve probably been inundated with similar letters from some of the most stalwart independent outlets in the country in recent months. We know the current dire state of independent journalism is probably overwhelming, but our work is upheld by the hope for a brighter media future.
We’re not asking you to reach into your pocket and give us your last dollar, but if you are in a position to give, we’re hoping you'll be as generous as possible.
** Please donate if you are able—Your support is FAIR’s backbone. ([link removed])
FAIR’s budget is minimal. Our full-time staff is made up of only four people. No lavish salaries, exorbitant travel costs or other unnecessary expenses. Visitors to our office in New York are often surprised by how small our space is. That’s because for us, it’s always been about the work.
It’s rare that a small, progressive nonprofit lasts as long as we have. We have no intention of stopping, and believe fighting disinformation and holding corporate media to account is more important now than ever. We believe an independent press is a core pillar of democracy, and we have dedicated our careers to fighting for it.
** But we need funds to tirelessly continue this work. ([link removed])
I’ve set a goal to raise at least $20,000 this October, in anticipation of higher goals during our most important fund drive of the year, which occurs in December. The goals we are setting here are minimums. We truly need as much support as possible to overcome this difficult time.
In the meantime, we promise to keep delivering illuminating CounterSpin episodes, critical media analyses and deep-diving studies—and ensure they are accessible to all.
We’ll never cry wolf—but we will be transparent about when we need extra support.
** That time is now. ([link removed])
Thank you so much for being part of this movement and supporting FAIR in any way you can.
We are proud to have built this wonderful community of media activists. Thank you for being a part of it.
In Solidarity,
