Why? Because Putin is an enemy of democracy. That's why he interfered in our elections. That's why he invaded Ukraine. That's why Putin must be stopped.
I'm running for Congress in Oklahoma's 1st District to stop MAGA Rep. Kevin Hern and his MAGA cohorts from turning America into Russia - an authoritarian state, absent the rule of law, and run by a President for life.
During my career as an FBI Special Agent, I traveled with an FBI team to Russia and Ukraine to conduct inspections of the FBI's international offices. In Russia, I was under constant surveillance by Russian FSB agents. My hotel room was subject to covert FSB searches. I was warned about corruption; if stopped by Moscow Police I could be detained unless I offered them rubles. During an early morning run along the Moskva River, I was surveilled by Russian agents.
We left Moscow and flew to Kiev. There, we were welcomed by our Ukrainian counterparts. They were a young democracy and they wanted what America has: democracy and the right to vote and determine their own national destiny. Now, Ukraine is fighting for their freedom. They need our help.
But hard-right MAGA politicians like Rep. Kevin Hern are taking the side of Putin and working to cut off U.S. military aid to Ukraine. Hern voted YES to a House amendment that read, "Notwithstanding any provision of this or any other Act, no federal funds may be made available to provide security assistance to Ukraine."
Our campaign strongly opposes Hern's support of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Since that invasion, there have been over 500,000 casualties. Thousands of civilian Ukrainians have been killed and millions displaced. I fully support U.S. military aid to Ukraine and their fight for freedom.
The best way forward is to provide the Ukrainians the support they need to defeat the aggressors and secure Ukrainian democracy. Hern's attempts to cut aid to Ukraine emboldens Putin, gives our European allies an excuse to cut back their own financial support, and weakens Ukraine's war effort.
I'm running for Congress because I want an America that stands up for democracy and confronts authoritarian regimes engaged in war crimes. Democracy is worth defending - ask the Greatest Generation who fought the Nazis and secured our freedoms. Together, we can stop Oklahoma's top MAGA politician, Kevin Hern, from using his Congressional seat to support Putin and hurt the Ukrainian people and their fight for democracy.
