Jack, birth control will soon be available over the counter. This is big news for our reproductive health access.
However, under current administrative guidance, health plans can still require a prescription for oral contraceptives–defeating the purpose of over-the-counter (OTC) access if you want it covered by your insurance.

Right now, this is a barrier that defeats the objective of making birth control easier to get.
That’s why we are pushing for the Biden administration to make no-cost coverage without a prescription an explicit requirement for all over-the-counter contraceptives.
Join us as we continue to fight for accessible, affordable reproductive health care.
Send a letter to President Biden and his Administration asking them to require insurance coverage of OTC contraceptives — without a prescription.

P.S. Below is an email we sent out earlier calling on the Biden admin to require insurance coverage of OTC contraceptives without a prescription:

Early next year, the United States will finally join 100+ other countries when Opill–a daily, progestin-only birth control pill–becomes available over-the-counter, no prescription needed! But over-the-counter access to birth control pills is not a replacement for insurance coverage of contraceptives.
Thanks to guidance issued by the Affordable Care Act, most private health insurance plans must cover all FDA-approved methods of contraception. But insurance plans can require a prescription first. We need the Biden Administration to make clear that over-the-counter birth control, now including Opill, purchased without a prescription, must also be covered.

Insurance coverage for all forms of contraception would reduce unnecessary barriers to affordable access, especially for young people. In a 2022 survey, 88% of young people reported difficulty accessing a birth control prescription, 55% faced so many barriers they could not get on birth control pills at all, and 1 out of 3 young people listed affordability as one of their main barriers to birth control access.
Research also shows that both adults and young people would be more likely to use an over-the-counter birth control pill if it was covered by insurance.
We deserve access! The Biden Administration must issue updated guidance this year to ensure Opill is fully covered when it hits the shelves early next year.
